Board of Education The Supreme Court has significant impact on molding the society of the United States, so does it play an important role in the process of the realization of equal protection on the right to education. From Plessy to Brown, every case that had milestone meaning indicated the evolution on the equal protection of the right to education, and also marked the progress of American civilization. However, there are different points between Plessy and Brown. Brown v. Board of Education was educational case of black race, but Plessy v. They have dissatisfaction and criticism of the mainstream culture and existing systems. Sympathy for the minorities and women, even the desire for peace are a common feature of these movements. I believe that many the participants of counter-cultural movement are also member of the New Left M ovement. Hippies are good representation of the counter culture movement, it usually involve drug abuse, sex and abortion. History professor Theodore Roszak points out the hippies and radical students have a same point, which is counter-culture. (Roszak, 1995) In his views, counter-cultural movement is all social protest movements in the United States, such as democracy movement, womens liberation movement, black civil rights movement, and anti-war movement. These movements absolutely have some actions what we cannot accept, but it is not violence. Drug abuse, sex, abortion and other revolt actions, you can say they are criminal, but they do not use force to attack someone. Hesitation Phenomena Free Essays

Hesitation phenomena is one of two types of pauses that occur during our speech and the other type is breathing pauses. Although hesitation does not have a linguistic function, it plays a role in the study of speech production and speech planning. There are three main categories of hesitation: 1- silent pauses,   2- filled pauses, which composes of non-linguistic or non-lexical vocalizations and the most common ones are: umm, ah and er. Psycholinguists have paid special attention as to where these pauses -whether silent or filled- occur in our speech. Some studies- like the one conducted by Boomer 1965- found that pauses are more frequent after the first word in the phonemic clause. On the other hand, some studies found that most pauses occur before important lexical words. Even though the findings of these studies goes to different directions, it has one thing in common that it suggest that speech planning and speech production are processes that happen in a parallel manner.In this experiment subjects are asked to perform tasks on speaking spontaneously and reading aloud as well as talking about a concrete object and an abstract concept. All topics are determined by the experiment conductors. The aim of this experiment is to ascertain whether the frequency of hesitation is higher in one of the tasks and to find whether hesitation occurs mostly in clauses or between them. Subjects All subjects participants in this experiment are undergraduate females ages 20-24 and speak English as a second language.Experiments conducted on 5 subjects. Methods : We’ve applied our experiments systematically putting in considerations the rules we must follow in order to get clear results. First of all we’ve chosen three different topics for our experiments : ( Reading aloud Vs Spontaneous speech ):1 †¢ We’ve chosen ( Chocolate production ) as a topic that the participants should talk about , a passage which is 17 lines including difficult concepts and lexical words . †¢ Then we’ve decided to have a standardized duration of recording each data which is one minute . The participants included in this experiments will read the passage , at the same time we prepares a recorder to record the speaker while she’s talking . †¢ One important aspect that we had to put into consideration is that the recording should be 100% clear i n order to be easy for us for analyzing the speech . †¢ After the speaker finish reading the passage, here comes our rule to analyze the record tape putting in our minds the types of hesitation pauses such as † pauses , complex pauses , filled pauses and word lengthening † After that the speaker should speak spontaneously about chocolate , we prepares our tape recorder and a stop watch because in this step the participants are allowed to talk only for 1 minute. Sometimes we get forced to interrupt the speaker because of the one-minute limit. 2 ( Concrete Vs Abstract ): In this experiment we’ve chosen two different general topics that the speaker should talk about : Concrete : Food Abstract : Democracy †¢ Before the speaker started to talk about the Concrete topic which is food we should prepare a recorder and stop watch. The speaker must talk for 1 minute about food. †¢ Then, we will replay the sound clip and write our comments. †¢ And when we come to the Abstract topic which is democracy, we will follow the same procedure. Hesitation might be caused by lack of self-confidence, nervousness, or the person may be looking for a feedback for what s/he will talk about.It seems like subjects hesitate before difficult and unfamiliar names to them. Example; in reading aloud experiment, (#1) they hesitate before the noun (Thobroma cacao) and before (Carolus Linnaeus). Also they may hesitate in the middle of the word (#4) (Swe-dish) because they are trying to read the word. They also hesitate at the beginning of sentences because they are thinking of how to express their thoughts. Example in speaking spontaneously (#3) said (First of a-ll [uh] I wanna say that chocolate is [uh] one type of my favorite food [uh] I pref-er many types of chocolate, I don’t like white chocolate or dark chocolate). Subjects hesitate before giving causes, example from abstract VS oncrete, (#2) ([uh] because that [uh] encourages the society to be [uh] well, more intellectual and mo-re productive perhaps. ). In these experiments, subjects tended to hesitate before choosing a lexical item which is semantically appropriate for their sentences (nouns, verbs). They tended to hesitate more when they say something in a wrong way and try to repair or correct it. Example from abstract VS concrete, (#4) (†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.. [uh] Food generally is [uh] considered as [uh] one requirement of†¦ requirement to live [uh] in order to live, you have to eat †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦[uh] generally I†¦ I like to eat, you know, many types of food. ). Our experiment in spontaneous speech and reading aloud shows that a person hesitates more in speaking spontaneously than in reading aloud.This is clear in the cases of silent pauses (24 in comparison to 18), filled pauses (25,16) and nervous laughter (8,1). But in word lengthening it is more in reading than speaking (20, 12). The other experiment is talking about concrete / every day things VS talking about an abstract concept. A person should hesitate more in abstract concepts than concrete objects but in our experiment, it surprisingly shows different results in which a person hesitate more in concrete than abstract concept. And silent pauses are more frequent in concrete (27, 20). Filling pauses are also more in concrete (27, 20), the nervous laughter is (4, 2). On the other hand, the word lengthening (14, 9) which is more in the abstract than concrete. Conclusion :In our experiment, hesitation was measured by counting the numbers of hesitation pauses in speech. It appears that under certain conditions of speech production the hesitation pauses reflect different reasons. Hesitation could be caused by either psychological factors or internal processes. Psychological as in the person could be nervous or lacks self-confidence (nervous laughter), or internal processes as in the person may be looking for a feedback for what s/he will talk about in spontaneous speech whether abstract or concrete, or when facing new lexical items such as ([uh] Carolus Linnaeus) or less frequent words ([um] inedible) in reading aloud.We have expected subjects to hesitate more in Speaking spontaneously in comparison to Reading aloud for a reason which is; subjects need to plan what they’re going to say and have to mentally construct grammatically and semantic ally correct sentences which, predictably takes more time than just reading a text that has been prepared beforehand, no matter how many difficult lexical items were in said text. The results came out supporting our assumption. Indeed, planning for speech consumes more time than reading. What was surprising to us was that hesitation was more in the second experiment in talking about the concrete concept more than the abstract object.The results were opposite to what we previously expected. The frequency of hesitation in concrete was 54. 4% to 45. 5% for the abstract. A possible explanation for such results could be that we constantly try to explain the abstract concepts in our minds while concrete concepts are taken for granted i. e. we don’t have to think about them, they’re there in front of our eyes. But a major point we would like to point to is English is a second language for all the subjects who took part in our experiment that might have been another reason for the hesitation in our experiments. All of the reasons mentioned above are not only reasons but actually examples of hesitation in our lives.Fox Tree (1995) estimated that the rate of disfluencies in spontaneous speech is about 6 words per 100 . Therefore, it is fairly common in our lives. Unfortunately we could not find any studies supporting or contradicting what we reached. It is considered as the phenomenon in which the employees cooperate within each other so that the individual skills are used for constructive feedback. I think that teamwork and social interaction is common in all organizations. The modern day organizations are striving to become competent in the global market (Galegher, Kraut Egido, 2014). This job cannot be done alone and it requires the interaction of several competent teams. When I was in my college life, I did not realize this and thought that if an individual performs well in an organization, then also the organization can perform well. However, I realized the importance of team work only when I joined my first organization. This self-reflection module would discuss the different theories related team work, soci al interaction and self-development through these activities. My personal, organizational learning along with the theories would be discussed, which would also determine how this information would be useful in future. Discussion I have always wondered how the team work would help me to learn new skills, concepts and knowledge. In the initial period of my organizational experience, I was afraid of interacting with people as it made me feel nervous. I have always thought that knowledge can be gathered by only reading and exposing myself to audiovisual modes. However, I realized that I was not right in my thinking and social interaction has major interaction on the self-development of an individual. Team work increases collaboration among people, which ultimately increases the productivity of the employees (Melo et al., 2013). It is an effective approach that for completing work in an effective manner and it increases the performance of the team members. During my initial days of career, I was involved in a series of meetings and group presentation to the clients. I was there with a team of four members, who belonged to different cultural background and I found it difficult to manage the cultural diversity of the team. In the initial levels, my team mates faced challenges of cultural differences and there were no communication or cooperation within the team. I have learnt about conflict management in my course and I found that conflict is integral to the functioning of any team. Conflict is considered as healthy or unhealthy depending upon its nature. The healthy conflict comprised of the different issues in perspectives, values or the ways of doing a task (Harper, 2015). Our gr oup faced healthcare conflict in this stage. However, there is also the existence of the unhealthy conflict, which is characterized by unnecessary competition over power, resources or rewards. There can be personal grudges or grapevine, which are considered as unhealthy sources of conflict (Adkins, 2017). In my group, there were ineffective communication owing to the diverse group members. I always took active part in reducing the level of conflicts in my team. I did this by choosing a common language English and giving a script of the presentation to all the group members so that they can refer to it instantly. I have learnt that it is not sufficient to have bookish knowledge and it is important to have practical experience. I have read many books on conflict management, however, I learnt the practical aspects of managing conflicts when I started working in a team. As opined by Natvig and Stark (2016), the Tuckman as well as Jensen model of the group development focuses on the fact that the development of a group goes through five distinct stages such as forming, storming, performing, norming and adjourning. In the initial stage of the client presentations, the team members were apprehensive about the level of comfort and there was a lack of communication as the members were not comfortable with each other. I took an active part and ensured that the team has clear goals, objectives and mission so that the team outputs are not compromised. I also engaged in improving the interpersonal communications within the team. On the this stage, I saw that there was some discomfort as well as confusion. This stage was followed by the storming stage, which is synonymous with social icebreaker (Levi, 2015). In this stage, we engaged in greater interaction with each other and shared some aspects of personal life too, so that there is a development of the effe ctive interpersonal relationships. This helped me to develop a sense of connection between the team members, in which there were greater sense of empathy. I considered that the first task of developing one of the robust team charter was to know each other in a better way and then form a way of accomplishing particular tasks. We shared small talks in which our goals and interests were discussed. However, one of the characteristics of the forming stage was project requirements and then individual roles. I defined the roles of my team members, but they did not agree with me initially. However, after mutual agreements, I was able to convince them about the important roles. These were the basic elements of the storming stage. The norming stage is synonymous with a cohesive team in which the conflict is reduced and there is an increase in the team confidence (Li, Kirkman Porter 2014). I have developed ground roles in the team and I was also successful in making good social relations which have enhanced my group identity. I realized that if I perform well alone, then there is no use as my team productivity would be the same. Hence, I instilled the sense of team bonding and my team became strong. The team proceeded towards the performing stage in which the team was successful in giving a brilliant presentation to the client and they praised about the teamwork that we showcased. This was possible only due to the collaborative effort that is displayed by my team. My team enjoyed the social creativity and the process that helped them to achieve the task objective. I was promoted to manager level after the previous accomplishment of the presentation as the client was extremely satisfied with our approach. I tried to bring greater cohesiveness in my team and I never acted as a dictator. I believed that the performance of my team would be helpful in fulfilling my organizational objectives. I was apprehensive about channelizing the way of tapping the potential of my team. I learnt that the tasks would be delegated to the team members based on their competency and skills. According to Lehmann-Willenbrock, Beck Kauffeld (2016), Belbins team roles specify the nine different behaviors possessed by individuals in the work place. I have read about Belbins team roles and have decided to implement the same in my team. I have learned that a few members in my team are resource investigators as they like to explore different opportunities. I decided to put them in the marketing departments, in which they can successfully find new market segments for expansi on. There were some members in my team who were coordinator, as they had the skills of identification of talent and clarification of the goals. I found them to be suitable for carrying out the human resource activities and they were able to recruit the best manpower. I feel that it is the job of a manager to bring together the team members and delegate tasks that would enhance their productivity. I gained the essential skills of the delegation during my group work in the initial days of my career. I was happy that I could effectively use it in my present job role. When I was performing my duties as manager, I found that there were some members of my team, who were unable to give the desired level of productivity. This was the reason of underperformance of my team as a whole. I found that a few members in my team were very demotivated, which was reflected in their work performance. Drnyei Ushioda (2013) says that motivation is the direction of the behaviour of a person which is influenced by external stimuli. My team members complained that there was no salary increment for last two years and this prevented them from concentrating on their work. There were instances when they were unable to complete the allocated tasks to them. I was very confused about the right tactics of making them understand since this is a similar situation and I have also gone through similar situations. I realized that even if I have suffered from the same thing, it is my duty to give adequate amount of motivation to my team. I let them understand that I would personal ly take the matter to senior management as well as senior HR managers. I tried to convince them about the different financial as well as non-financial benefits that I would propose to the senior management. I said that I would ensure that they get both these benefits. This assured them that their hard works would be recognized by the management and this increased their motivation levels. The motivation level of the team is important so that everyone gives their optimum output and the team can achieve the organizational goals (Huang Hew, 2016). I have learnt that communication is vital for the success of the team and hence promoted clear channels of communication (Broadbent, 2013). I motivated the team members in a way that they engaged in communicating the vital information to their fellow team mates. This helped the team members to stay up to date and perform in a collaborative manner. Conclusion I gained very important teachings from this reflective learning exercise which would help me in the future professional development. I engaged in group presentations, where there is a lot of team work needed. I learnt that there are initial conflicts in the team as the team members are not aware of each others backgrounds. I also learnt that it is possible to promote good interpersonal relationships by breaking the ice or brainstorming sessions. I have learnt that it is important for proper delegation of work, which would help me in the accomplishment of goals in my future life. I have also learnt the fact motivation keeps a team going and is instrumental in achieving the desired level of outputs. The Bluest Eye , a heart breaking story of a little back girl living in Lorain, Ohio during the 1930's, manifest the longing of Pecola Breedlove's obsession for love. In order to achieve love she would have to deny herself of her true identity and surrender to what is thought to be beautiful and superior: little white girls "gifted" with blond hair and blue eyes. The novel procalaims the nation's love for little white girls. Sadly, Pecola wishes every night to abolish her ugliness: her blackness. If she could only become "beautiful" she would be loved , rather then become the subject of hatred ranging fom people like her mother tro her teachers to her classmates. Recounting the story of a black girl's hardship's in the world of prejudice, Alice Walker's , The Color Purple presents a moving story of love, ill-treatment, and growth. Celie, the main character, advances toward inner growth changing from a abused and submissive wife to an independent and confident black women. The story is written in Celie's journal addressed to God. This is because the only person she thinks she can trust is God I with her secrets. From Celie's journal the reader finds out about other characters in the novel such as Alfonso, Mr._____, Shug, Nettie, and Harpo. The theme of the novel is straightforward and simple. Like many of the other novels devoted to the mistreatment of blacks and black women especially. Much of the novel reflect points in the authors life. The novel is derived from Alice Walker's own personal experience, growing up in the rural south as an abused and uneducated child. Black Boy is an autobiography about Richard Wright. He was born in the rural Mississippi, the grandson of slaves. Richard Wright overcame every social obstacle including poverty, racism and limited education to achieve the regonition as the creator of America's most powerful literature. Black Boy, Richard Wright's autobiography, covers his childhood and early adulthood. It opens with four-year-old Richard's rebellion against authority. In order to occupy his time Richard accidently burns down his grandfathers house. "My idea was growing. Now I was wondering how the long fluffy curatians would look if I held the burning straws under them( pg 11)." All throughout the entire novel Richard has some type of hunger. His hunger gets him into trouble. At the time, Richard was and resentful of his mother's command of silence. After his mother determined that he was unharmed, she beat him so badly that he lost consciousness. When Richard and his brother were very young, Nathan Wright, their father, a sharecropper , abandoned the family, plunging them into poverty. Richard's constant hunger made him extremely bitter toward his father. Over the next few years, Ella, Richard's mother, would desperately attempt to feed, clothe, and shelter her children. Her long hours of work often meant leaving her children with little supervision. When Richard was six years old, he began begging drinks in a nearby saloon where the customers plied him with nickels if he would repeat various curse words and offensive phrases. When beatings didn't work helpfully with his growing obsession with alcohol, Ella engaged the babysitting services of an older black woman in the neighborhood who watched every move. Ella moved in with her sister, Maggie, and Maggie's husband, Silas Hoskins. Hoskins was the owner of a successful saloon, so there was always more than enough food to eat. Nevertheless, Richard was unable to lose the fear that his hunger would return anew, so he hoarded food all over the house. Unfortunately, the newly found stableness was not destined to last. The local whites were jealous of Hoskins's profitable business, so they murdered him and threatened to kill the rest of his family. Maggie and Ella fled with the two boys to live in another town. Maggie and Ella's combined wages proved adequate to feed and clothe Richard and his brother, but Maggie became involved with "Professor" Matthews, a wanted man. This is called the hunger games, a â€Å"celebration† rather than a punishment to remember the 13th district that attempted to overrule the capitol, therefore, destroyed. The treacherous and notorious hunger games are nationally televised to all the districts as a lesson and are an amazing and honorable task to the people of the capitol. When Katniss Everdeen’s sister is randomly selected, Katniss takes her place in the games and wins. She is then reselected back into the games the next year and forcefully taken against her will in a surprise attack during the games into what is now known as the surviving district 13. In the final book of the trilogy, Mockingjay, starts off where Katniss is then taken into the underground District 13, a secret remaining district which is grouping together as rebels to fight against the capitol. Mockingjay has captured thousands of audiences ranging from kids, teenagers, and adults. Mockingjay has an unexpected turn in fate when most of the trilogies fans expect to finally see Katniss in freedom from the games and to find her romantic life where she can live in happiness and peace. When she becomes the rebel’s leader and emblem in district 13, it’s unexpected when she is soon found to be trapped in the evil and manipulative ways of government type control again. The capitol had used a televised, violent, and an effective show of the hunger games to prove to the world how much power and control they had over everyone else, and to threaten others so that they will not try and regain strength against the capitol again. Now, districts 13’s rebels are trying to overrule the capitol by using the same savage like strategies. They are creating videos of their rebellious actions and uprisings and televising them as well for more supporters. Soon enough, Katniss realizes she has fallen into the manipulation of another group again, and is causing just as much anger, pain. Sacrifice, and war as the capitol themselves were. This book is as popular and similar in fiction, style, and audience as some of the greatest fiction stories in the world such as, â€Å"Harry Potter†, â€Å"The Chronicles of Narnia†, and the â€Å"Twilight† trilogy. They all take place in a separate fantasy world where its evil vs. the good incorporated with the usual romance affairs. The nasty tracker jackers that take over memoires and change them so people forget who they are, the beautiful jabberjays, so entrancing yet evil by projecting the screams of your loved ones being tortured. Katniss as the main character of course is like Harry Potter, or Bella. She is brave, important, bossy, skillful, intelligent, logical, swift, humorous, thoughtful, caring, independent and sympathetic. Her personality traits are amazing as well as her physical, she is enchanting and beautiful. Her looks are mesmerizing when she rides across the arena in her carriage and dress on fire. She is the girl on fire, the fierce and brave girl who started it all by saving her younger sister. The story is dark and twisted, yet mind grabbing, and fascinating. Its gruesome and detailed events are disturbing but so thrilling and adventurous you can’t seem to stop reading this famous and loved trilogy.

Smallpox, commands respect and the concern of the American public along with that terrorism, of the biological variety, however improbable, is very possible.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Smallpox was once large in scope before vaccinations. At one point or another, everyone was going to contract it. A release of smallpox in aerosol form would scatter readily, and because of its stability in aerosol form would prove very formidable even in a small dose. Globalization can be defined as the increasing flow of products, people, money, and ideas across the globe. National economies are being swept into the global economy. One can thus think of globalization as rushing through four channels: †¢ Freer trade goods; †¢ Freer mobility of labor; †¢ Freer investment; and †¢ Freer communication, thanks to telecommunications and the Internet. Pros and Cons 1. Capitalism Free enterprise is now the dominant economic system in the world. China is very much capitalist and her late Communist Party leader Deng Xiaoping coined the slogan, â€Å"To get rich is glorious. † Only Cuba and North Korea are holding on to the central planning system of running the economy. Capitalism brings along free trade and the free flow of money across the earth. Countries belonging to the World Trade Organization are trying to bring down tariff barriers. Today, immense portfolio investments zip in and out of countries at the click of a mouse (Baylis & Smith, 2001). With free trade comes economic integration. It is possible to download an album of songs in the United States of America, turn it into CDs in Europe, print the cover and lyric sheet in France, and sell it in Asia. The greatest story of economic integration is the European Union, with its common currency, the euro (Brecher & Costello, 2004). 2. Information economy Another driving force is the knowledge economy. Land, labor and capital are bowing in importance to brain creativity. In the United Kingdom, over a three-year span, manual jobs dropped by 750,000, while professional jobs shot up by 1. 5 million (Brecher & Costello, 2004). 3. Mass Media The invention of the printing press helped scattered people become a national community. In the same way, the evening news is nurturing world’s community. The suffering in India and Indonesia are brought home through CNN. 4. Telecoms There is a global boom in telecommunications. A fourth of all Europeans, have mobile phones. Can you get fired for what you post online? In October 2010, Mariana Cole-Rivera, a domestic violence advocate at the group Hispanics United of Buffalo, began the Facebook thread that would get her fired. Cole-Rivera and four of her co-workers who'd responded to her post had lost their jobs. Their boss said their Facebook thread violated HUB's harassment policy by disparaging a co-worker. The Facebook post said that, â€Å"Lydia Cruz, who is one of their co-workers, felt that the group wasn't helping their clients enough at the Hispanics United of Buffalo.Cole-Rivera responded to this by saying, â€Å"IVe about had it! and she also wrote, â€Å"My fellow coworkers how do you feel? † Within minutes, HUB colleagues began posting supportive comments. â€Å"What the Hell,† one wrote, â€Å"we don't have a life as is, said one, and what else can we do, the others wrote. † After they were fired, the workers took their case to the National Labor Relations Board, the f ederal agency charged with interpreting and enforcing U. S. labor law.A Judge sided with them, but now the case is on appeal. There have been more than a few stories in the news about employees being fired because of what they posted online. People need to ealize that when you use your work computer for any personal business whether it is good or bad, can get you in trouble, or even cost you your Job, especially, if the company has guidelines on computer use on the Job. Dan Prywes, an expert in labor and employment law, in Washington, D. C. explains that â€Å"Employers are within their rights to limit social networking site access, â€Å"Dan also said that, â€Å"you need to be prepared for the consequences when you post online.If a small-business owner sees something unsavory written about themselves or their company online, they can call their workers in and talk with them about it. But whether or not you can take action and fire them is dependent on state law, outside of a wr itten contract or clause at public companies, employment is at-will. My question is: What are your rights when it comes to talking about work online? Should you be allowed to say what you want?Recently, the National Labor Relations Board issued a series of rulings and advisories that have made it illegal for employers to fire anyone who casts the company in an untavorable light online. The NLRB says employees nave a right to discuss work conditions freely and without fear of retribution, whether the discussion takes place at the office or on Facebook. However, not all work-related speech is protected. For example, your employer can still fire you if you post something negative about a client or customers on Facebook. In my opinion, if you don't have anything good to say, don't say it at all.

The philosophy that embodies animal liberation, moves to re-establish the rights and inherent value of all living organisms in order to create an equality between all life forms, where no species has supremacy over another, and all animals have an intrinsic right to life. The basic principle of equality does not require equal or identical treatment; it requires equal consideration (Singer, 1991:2). Thus each individual must be perceived as a unique being with their own inherent value, and the reciprocal relationship that is demonstrated within human society can be extended to include non-humans, through an ethic of respect and concern for nature. It is the differences within human society and within nature that leads to cultural, spiritual and physical diversity, and consequently non-humans should not be compromised as individuals due to their physical and anatomical appearance. By negatively focusing on differences in intellect, moral capacity and physical appearance between humans and non-humans, a division of rights and respect has been drawn, whereby any animal regardless of their abilities or characteristics, is condemned to a totalitarian existence. A particle is always placed after the word it modifies. Here are several different usages of bakari with sample sentences. I think it is probably easy to understand its various usage through contextual examples. Bakkkari, bakashi and bakkashi can be used in informal situations instead of bakari. Johnson Abstract Behavioral assessment involves a variety of methods including direct observations, interviews, checklists, and tests to identify and define targets for behavior change. (Miltenberger, 2012) This assessment will utilize evidence based research to clearly identify target behaviors to assist our clients in implementing a successful intervention plan that is based on a behavior modification plan that objective, clearly defined, measurable and geared to the individual’s specific needs. We hypothesize that we will be able to reduce Emily’s refusal to attend school, her crying tantrums and head banging, as well as improve and increase Mr. Smith’s employee’s attendance and restore production to normalcy. Case #1 This case study examines why 6-year old Emily is exhibiting behavior issues. Recommended by her pediatric psychologist her parents want to understand this change in behavior that started when she started first grade. It appears that Emily’s reluctance to attend school which she claims is no longer fun, often results in her having screaming tantrums in which cries and bangs her head on the floor. Her parents also noted that she has not been able to sleep in her own bed and they must take her theirs in order for her to fall asleep, but even after falling asleep if they return her to her bed she will awake and cry and scream until her parents return her to their bed. Due to these outburst she is often allowed to remain home from school. Her parents are tired and frustrated and in need of answers for this behavior change and an intervention to return their household to normalcy. Emily’s teacher reports that on most occasions she is well behaving and her basic academic skills appear to be at grade level. It is hypothesized that Emily’s behavior maybe as a result of bullying and teasing, if we could get her to address her fears we will be able to reduce the screaming tantrums and fear of going to school and return her to the normal school environment. In communicating with Emily’s parents we were able to identify the target behavior that they would like addressed. Emily’s parents would like us to address her reluctance to attend school resulting in a screaming tantrums, which includes a loud piercing cry followed by her head repeatedly striking the floor. We believe this target behavior needs to be addressed because it poses a social significant health risk which may result in bodily injury for Emily. This behavior is also being targeted because it results in a â€Å"negative reinforcement by escape from a task† (Cooper, 2007, p. 49), this behavior is inadvertently being reinforced by her parent’s reluctance to upset her so they allow her to remain home. This cannot continue as it will also affect her academic and social interaction skills, there may also be financial ramifications if the parents are missing work or having to find a sitter to care for Emily while they go to work. It is hypothesized that Emily’s overall reluctance and tantruming would decrease and that, with time, we would see her willingly wanting to attend school and interacting with others more frequently, we expect to see a decrease in the number of tantrums and head banging’s. As part of the intervention technique we will be able to create a confident rapport with Emily, where she can share her fears and concerns regarding school. Based on the information shared we will be able to change the target behavior by helping Emily adapt to her school environment. We will carry out a functional assessment on Emily using direct observation both at her home and school to assess and gathering relevant data on the target behavior, such as duration and frequency and whether or not they are preceded by a visible antecedent. The behavior modification program that will be used is operant condition using positive reinforcement. Each day that Emily goes to school without a resulting tantrum she gets to do an activity of her choosing with the family when she gets home. If she has a tantrum and refuses to go to school she has to do one hour of reading. We will be tracking her progress using a excel spreadsheet after which we will chart and graph the results on a weekly basis and do a monthly assessment. The data gathered will be reported by her family and teachers, so as to get an accurate view of her overall behavior in both environment. We chose operant conditioning using positive reinforcement because, â€Å"operant conditioning is the means by which we use reinforcement or punishment to change one’s behavior and â€Å"the goal of behavior modification is to establish desirable new behaviors or skills†. (Miltenberger, 2012), in Emily’s case we hope to increase her desire to attend school by creating a positive experience and reduce her tantruming and head banging episodes by allowing her to use her words to express herself. Once per week on a Friday a visit will be made to Emily’s school and home to collect the charts, review any discrepancies and get a verbal feedback on Emily’s behavior. We will meet with Emily as well to learn how she is doing and assess if the behavior modification is having a positive outcome. The data is analyzed by gathering the number of refusal to attend school for the week, the number of tantruming and head bang, as well as any disruptive behavior in the classroom. We will be able to identify whether or not the intervention is successful if the data reveals a decrease such as only once per week does her parents have to keep her home for refusal to attend school or if they do not have to keep her home at all. Table 1.1 After a 3 month period a review of the behavior modification program will be assessed, if it is found to be unsuccessful or not progressing as expected, we will review the data to see if there are specific days when Emily exhibits continuous refusal to attend school, we could also assess the stimulus being used to reinforce the desired behavior, changes to the program will only help to benefit and address any future needs that may arise. If however, the program is successful and we are able to cause extinction of the behavior which is â€Å"the process by which a previously reinforced behavior is no longer followed by the reinforcing consequences, and the frequency of the behavior decreases in the future (Miltenberger, 2012, p. 516), we could say the behavior modification intervention is successful, even if there is only a reduction in the number of refusal to attend school, or even a reduction of the need for positive reinforcements. The scientific method has guided this experiment by helping us to evaluate the data using frequency of measurement, resulting in accurate, reliable, and believable data to create an individualized assessment intervention plan. Case #2 Mr. Smith owns a manufacturing company which specializes in custom figure skates. He has 30 employees who has highly specialized training required for the production of these skates. Mr. Smith is concerned that over the last year his workforce seems to be suffering from a high percentage of absenteeism, which is having a negative effect on production and the health of the company. Prior to soliciting our help Mr. Smith has tried to address this behavior by offering breakfast which consists of coffee and donuts, he has also called a meeting and shared with them that the end result of continued absence will result in the company suffering a financial loss and closing. He noted that neither of these interventions has worked and seem to only increase the problem. In the case of Mr. Smith the target behavior being identified is the consistent absenteeism which is defined as unreported or unscheduled absence from work by an employee who is not on vacation or other documented leave. This target behavior is being addressed because it affects productivity and the overall well-being of the organization, employee morale and the community. The behavior also affects the social responsibility of the individuals who have contracted to work for a specific period of time and should give adequate notice or inform a manager of any absence. Antecedent: Employee shift starts, production line short. Behavior: Employee does not show up for work, does not call. Consequence: Unable to meet production quota and financial obligations. Mr. Smith previous interventions of providing breakfast of coffee and donuts or sharing the company financial perspective, may not have worked because he did not do the adequate research needed to assess the situation and offer a contingency plan that was appealing to the employees, or his overall approach could also not have been appealing to the employees. It is our job as the behavior analysis to help Mr. Smith achieve his goal by selecting target behaviors that are the most directly and functionally related to those goals of his employees. Evidence suggests that the continued absenteeism maybe due to low morale, stress or sheer employee burnout. We hypothesize that after assessing and defining the cause of the absenteeism we will be able to create an intervention plan that will improve attendance, reduce employee burnout and restore the company morale. After gathering data from HR on the persons who are habitual absentees, individual interview was schedule for one on ones to understand the reason and what can be done to assist the employee in restoring their attendance record. For ethical reasons this information will not be shared with HR. Based on the results of the interviews and questionnaires completed by the other staff, we decided that a contingency contract or a behavioral contract would be implemented to restore productivity within the organization. Each employee will have the opportunity to be rewarded for completing their 40 hour work week for 30 minutes of paid time off per week. The company will implement a time card system and HR will judge the time completed and award the time off accordingly, employees do not have to take their time off weekly but may accumulate and take as needed. Additionally, the organization will implement paid sick leave, a daycare reimbursement program, a schedule adjustment for employees need ing time off during the work hours, and a monthly health truck run to ensure staff is mentally and physically fit. To address the morale issue Mr. Smith has agreed to supplement a breakfast and lunch program as well as quarterly picnics. Each person will be given a task sheet to review and sign, this Behavioral contract will take effect the first of the month and the first review will be done a month later. We will be able to assess the success of the program by a decrease in the number of absenteeism and an increase in productivity and production, as well as employee morale. Charts representing the percentage of attendance versus absenteeism will also serve as a visual for performance. If the expected outcome is not obtained, we would reassess and try another strategy such as possibly a token economy system offering which is more tangible and is immediate in occurrence and reinforcements. â€Å"Extinction is the process that weakens behavior† (Miltenberger, 2012), Extinction/Response maintenance is ensuring that the behavior that has been reinforced for a period of time and is no longer reinforced in the future. Measures need to be put in place to maintain the success of behavior that has now become extinct. In Emily’s case the potential issue with extinction is that her tantrums may return but reinforced based on another behavior. According to (Miltenberger, 2012), â€Å"a potential issue with extinction/response maintenance is that behavior often increases in frequency, duration or intensity prior to being extinct and may undergo extinction regardless of positive or negative reinforcement.† CONCLUSION As behavior analysis we were able to determine that Emily and Mr. Smith’s employees did not need to learn a new skill related to behavior. Instead we recognized the need to make changes to their environment and preferences in order to support them and change their behavior. Since Emily experienced such distress when being prepared for school, changes were made in the environment at home and school, and reinforcers were used to encourage a positive outlook for going to school. Mr. Smith’s employees were given opportunities to not only change their attendance habits, but increase company morale and productivity. Despite these apparent drawbacks when creating an intervention plan in a controlled experimental settings, the findings largely supports both hypotheses suggesting that behavioral analysis when used in a scientific method with clearly defined target behavior, the result is an objective and measurable intervention plan. STEAMBOATS IN LOUISIANA   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Robert Fulton started the very first commercially successful steamboat service in America. His steam-powered paddleboat, the Clermont, sailed up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany in August of 1807. This trip lasted 32 hours The first steamboats were demonstrated in1787. They were used on the river ways to bring cargo, cotton, sugar, and people to their destinations. The steamboat played a major part in the population growth. The steamboats were usually made of wood and were all kinds of sizes. They looked like giant floating houses with large smokestacks and paddlewheels. They were used for carrying people and supplies up and down the river.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Steamboats were later used as show boats for entertainment. The purchase of Louisiana in 1803 made New Orleans a part of the U.S. and opened the door to gamblers. The high life so popular in New Orleans spread north which ushered in the era of the riverboat gambler. By 1820, 69 steamboats were operating the western rivers. And by 1860, that number had increased to 735. These steamboats were christened â€Å"floating palaces with luxurious quarters, world class food well stoked bars and wealthy passengers. In1937 riverboat travel entered the passenger boat era. Calliopes were used on the boats to let people know that the boat was docked. The name â€Å"calliope† comes from the Greek goddess â€Å"muse of sound.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The paddle wheels were mounted either on the side or back of the boat. After the Civil War, the stern (back of the boat) paddle wheel was most popular. Although the paddle wheel is very large it draws just a few feet of water. The wheel spins about 18 times a minute with only four planks in the water for best speed. A steamboat travels about 15 miles an hour and 16 to 17 miles an hour on a swift river.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The very first paddle boats ran on wood. Coal replaced wood in 1860 and oil replaced coal in 1950. Many of the earl steamboats burned up because the fire used to create the steam would burn the boat. It took 250 pounds of steam just to blow the whistle. Maintenance for a 120 ton steamboat was $1,800, 36% of it was for wages paid to officers and crew members, 18% of it was for provisions, 12% of it was for incidentals and insurance, and the rest of it was for 25 cords of wood per day, at $2.

Compare and Contrast Essay on King Lear and Macbeth

Shakespeare had written many plays in his life time, some of them included various tragedies which included King Lear and Macbeth. All of Shakespeare’s plays had a theme which was used to help the story’s plot to advance further, making events much more interesting. King Lear and Macbeth both have a common theme of madness that is apparent throughout the play which has been depicted differently. They are both written in different ways but still share a same purpose. The essay will be broken down into three parts; firstly we will look at the way madness is viewed in Macbeth. Secondly, we will look at the way King Lear portrays madness lastly we will compare the two to see how differently madness is displayed. While both plays share this similarity, the plays differ by the way the theme of madness is executed. In Macbeth, both the main characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin to show clear signs of madness through alterations in their physical senses. (smell, sight etc. ) this is evident when Lady Macbeth hallucinates that her hands are still covered in king Duncan’s blood despite having washed then several times. Here’s the smell of blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. (Act 5, scene 1, 46-47) Shakespeare uses imagery to give a better understanding of what is going on within the characters mind. Here madness is altering Lady Macbeth’s sense of smell and sight, this tricks her into believing that King Duncan’s blood will never dissipate from her hands even though they are perfectly clean. Another example of the theme of madness that is characterized by Macbeth is found in act three, scene four, the climax of the play. Immediately guilt ridden from ordering the murder of Banquo, Macbeth reaches his pinnacle of madness; exemplified by his delusion of Banquo's ghost. Showing that he can no longer differentiate between reality and his imagination Macbeth shouts, Avaunt! And quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee! Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold; Thou hast no speculation in those eyes Which thou dost glare with (III. iv. 93-97). Ross responds to him, What sights, my lord (III. iii. 118). The Insanity of Macbeth is shown in these quotes. Shakespeare's description of Macbeth's thoughts visibly reveals the theme of madness. Shakespeare portrays madness among many of his characters, and he returns to the theme again and again. Indirect characterization in the form of Lear's mad speeches allows Shakespeare to convey the theme of madness. For example one of Lear's first speeches after things started to go bad for him, Poor naked wretches, wheresoe'er you are, That bide the pelting of this pitiless storm, How shall your house-hold heads and unfed sides, Your loop'd and window'd rag-gedness, defend you†¦ (III. iv. 35-38). Lear's insanity increases throughout the play, demonstrated to the audience through more speeches, until his emotions overthrow his reason at the climax of the play. Lear randomly shouts in to the storm, Rumble thy bellyfull! Spit, fire! Spout, rain! Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire are my daughters. I tax not you, you elements, with unkindness. I never gave you kingdom, called you children (III. ii. 14-17). The example of Lear invoking the storm to destroy the seeds of matter along with many other absurd statements illustrates that he has an unsound mind and it is made clear to the audience by his words. Shakespeare expands on the theme of madness in King Lear by Lear again using his words to express the reason for his insanity. The cause is the realization that his daughters Goneril and Regan do not love him. What finally pushed him over the edge was the cruel actions afflicted on him by the people that supposedly loved him. To such a lowness but his unkind daughters. †¦ ‘Twas this flesh begot Those pelican daughters describes Lear of the cruelty of his daughters (III. iii. 76,80-81). The character of Lear produces the theme of madness by expressing his own increasing insanity and reasons the reason for it in raving tangents. The style and depiction of the theme of madness are very different in both plays. Macbeth shows madness in the main characters with lots of imagery, giving a very physical sense of feeling towards the audience making them have a better understanding of what the characters are feeling. In King Lear madness is depicted through the main characters dialogue. This is meant to show the psychological turmoil going through the character’s mind which helps the audience understand why and what the character is doing within the play. In conclusion it is clear that madness was a very re occurring theme in both plays King Lear and Macbeth. However, the style in which the madness was depicted in each play is very different, in Macbeth madness within the main characters is shown through basic hallucinations through sight and smell, whereas in King Lear Shakespeare wanted the main characters to display madness through the dialogue. Both techniques used by Shakespeare were made to ultimately give more of an understanding of what is going on within the play. Both uses of madness are equally effective depending on which kind of play is written
